Revisiting the 1964 album
How to Keep Your Husband Happy
Look Slim! Keep Trim!
Exercise Along with Debbie Drake
Listening to all this non-ironically-intended Mad Men nonsense, you can just picture the horror show in your head. Some unfortunate, 1964 lied-to woman sprawled out on the carpet of her living room while playing this record and feeling bad about herself. The cruel hand of male marketing is perplexing. What were these guys thinking? Unbelievably, the album sold well. And women bought it. Drake was famous in the '60s. She was a pioneer of television fitness shows. An exercise guru. She had a syndicated 15-minute workout that aired nationally, and she frequently appeared on talk shows like Johnny Carson. Her philosophy is controversial. She never mentions the health benefits of exercise, only that it will make women's bodies look good and keep their fat, lazy, boring and self-centered husbands happy. See the eye-rolling album liner notes below.
BACK COVER LINER NOTES
Right after life and liberty, the Declaration of Independence lists "the pursuit of happiness." For most everyone happiness means health and love. Do you know that overweight (sic) is a threat to the happiest of marriages? The obese wife knows that she is a disappointment to her husband. It is dangerous to family contentment and security when Mamma is the best advertisement for her own calorie-burdened cooking. Fighting against weight is one of the surest ways of fighting for husband's continued love, and getting it. There is a great reward for getting that figure back where it ought to be. Nothing is quite so good for the ego as admiring glances from the man you love. Money won't buy it, but dieting and exercising will accomplish it.
Men like a woman to be vivacious and alive, and they love a soft, musical, feminine voice.
It is not enough just to be in love with a man; you must know how to express your love in many ways. Men need constant attention and affection. It is not enough to say I love you; you must constantly prove it in many ways and one of the best ways to express your love is to keep your body beautiful. It is the obligation of every woman to bring out her best features. If she does, she'll find her husband will be happier and his eye won't rove far from home. Take a look at yourself; does your excess poundage outnumber your anniversaries? If so, it's time to begin on a well-planned program. Give your husband a chance to admire in you what he admires in other women.
A woman's beauty starts with the way she carries herself. Regardless of how slim and attractive she may be, if she has bad posture the illusion is spoiled. Having good posture for a few moments is not enough; she must be able to maintain it. This is difficult to do if her neck and back muscles are not strong. A large part of a woman's allure to a man is in her movements. A graceful woman moves like a cat. In order to have graceful, slow, direct movements, a woman needs strength. Her body should be strong, yet give the appearance of being delicate and tender. Exercise, if done properly, does this. This album is designed to help give you everything that's womanly and if followed regularly, a figure that will be desired by men, and envied by women. You are going to exercise every part of the body, even the hands and feet, because every part of you must remain beautiful and alive.
HAIR
Regular shampoo to keep your hair looking its best can be done every three days or once a week. It depends on the smog you're subjected to and also on the amount of oil in your scalp. Lie in a reclining position to bring blood to the head and pull your hair near the roots. Consult the bicycle exercise in this album that brings blood to the head.
EYES
Your eyes are the focal point of your face and everything should be done to enhance their beauty. To open your eyes, do this exercise. Open your eyes as wide as you can while at the same time opening your mouth and pulling your upper lip tightly down over your teeth. You might like to try experimenting with eyelashes - they help to make you feel glamorous.
HANDS
A man loves to hold graceful hands. It's quite often a problem for a woman to keep her hands graceful and attractive with all the housework she must do. Water and heat are very aging to hands. Always wear rubber gloves when washing dishes or any other chores that require putting your hands in water. Use insulated gloves (you can buy them in a dime store) when you are cooking or when your hands are near heat, and especially when you have to reach into the oven. Practice a graceful position with hands up, since when you hold your hands down, the veins stand out and make them look ugly. Included in this album are exercises designed especially for the hands.
ARMS
Heavy, flabby arms can make a woman appear much older than she is. You can reduce the size of your arms with the arm exercises on this record. Remember also to cut down on all starches.
BUST
Acquiring and maintaining an attractive bust line is something you must work on all the time. Use the dumbbells or heavy weights every other day.
WAIST
When a man thinks of a tiny waist, he thinks of someone young and feminine. A small waistline can be maintained through life. When you need to take an extra inch off your waist, wear a tight waist cincher and do waist exercise in this album.
HIPS
The hips can make a woman look matronly or youthful. A man likes to see hips that are round and firm and lifted. So many women fail to exercise their hip muscles that they begin to look matronly and flabby in swimsuits and shorts. You'll be rewarded if you faithfully follow the excellent hip exercises in this album.
THIGHS
There is nothing more unattractive than fat thighs. I dislike myself when my thighs get a little heavy. At 21 my thighs were my biggest worry and I became desperate to reduce. Men love firm thighs and if you follow the exercises you too can have lovelier thighs.
